Whatês up UCLA Bruins! My name is George Chacon and I am a second year International Development Studies and Sociology major with an Education Studies minor. I am the Students First! candidate for Cultural Affairs Commissioner. Students First! envisions a university that is committed in maximizing the student experience through increasing the quality of education and promoting student engagement. As your Cultural Affairs Commissioner, I will put Students First! by:

Diversifying the music and culture in the UCLA campus

Issue:

UCLA is known for its concerts and events that showcase huge artists, events such as Bruin Bash, JazzReggae Festival, and Hip Hop Appreciation Week. However, UCLA has the stigma of only supporting Indie or Urban culture and performers. There are a lot more students interested in other types of music and cultures and they are not getting that experience or the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Solution:

I will introduce different genres of music and cultures by:

-- Having monthly noon concerts that introduce alternative genres such as: Metal, bluegrass, folk, house, electronica, and other genres of music.
-- Have student groups be on the forefront of introducing these genres.
-- Have documentary films and panel discussions on the histories of these alternative music and cultures.

Why am I the best person to do this?:

Coming from the Los Angeles, Echo Park community, I have been introduced to many types of cultures. This includes music. I have seen jazz sets, rappers, metal, folk, and occasionally electronica. Being a member of the Eclectic Open Mic Series in Cultural Affiars this past year, I have seen students showcase their talents through the blues, folk, and house music. I have also organized a charity show with various artists to raise money to Save Darfur when I was a senior in high school. With some contacts and experience in organizing shows, I know my vision will become a reality.

Have UCLA student artists, bands, and groups showcase their talents

Issue:

There are many avenues for students to showcase their talents here in UCLA like the CAC weekly Eclectic Open Mic and Jazz Series. However, there are students who practice and work hard and most UCLA students do not even know who they are. These are artists who deserve to be showcased for being Bruin artists and need to be supported.

Solution: Program •Battle of the Artsê with other organizations.

-- With the help of other organizations, organize various student performers to battle it out.
-- Winners will be opening for the big events on campus before mainstream acts. Events include JazzReggae Festival, Hip Hop Appreciation Week, World Fest, and Bruin Bash.

Why am I the best person to do this?:

I am very involved in the UCLA campus when it comes to know and find student performers. Working in Hip Hop Congress I tend to know beatboxers, rappers, and poets. In Eclectic Open Mic, I got to meet with various folk singers and alternative bands that use instruments that many people have never seen before. Also, there are various students and friends from organizations that are talented. More importantly, this would need great organization. I have organized various conferences, like the 14th annual Raza Youth Conference in 2007, a conference that helped me gain experience in putting an event while interacting and organizing with various people from different organizations. This is an important fact because I will be working with other organizations to get artists and an audience.

Increase access to art, music, and dance classes to non-majors. Issue:

Students who are non-majors to the arts have difficulty accessing classes that interest them due to the cultural and artistic knowledge one could gain. The arts are a major component to anyoneês education as researched from the non-profit organization American for the Arts. Students see the importance of education as they go through art and cultural curriculum.

Solution:

Increase and create art, music, and dance classes for all students.

-- Talk to the art and WAC departments to increase access to certain classes.
-- Initiate student run classes that focuses on the arts through Undergraduate Student Initiative Education (USIE) and the Academic Affairs Commissioner.

Why am I the best person to do this?:

I work for a Student Initiative Access Center project, SPACE (Samahang Pilipino Advancing Community Empowerment) and the Community Programs Office, which are student run. Students organize and facilitate workshops and educational discussion on various different subjects. Working with the CPO, along with the USIE and the Education for Sustainable Living Program (student run class with the Institute of the Environment), I am sure it is feasible for students to run classes. I also will have contact with staff in the art department thanks to the Students First! candidate for Academic Affairs Commissioner, Jeremiah Garcia.

A VOTE FOR GEORGE CHACON IS A VOTE TO PUT STUDENTS FIRST!
As the current Assistant Commissioner for Cultural Affairs, I know that everyone in Cultural Affairs work to put on programs that not only entertain the student body, but to educate them about issues and cultures.
