![]() Gilberto Chacon - General Representative- Gamma Zeta Alpha, Inc. Raza Liaison- Raza Coalition, Moderator - Latin American Student Association (LASA), General Representative & Publicity Director - Bruin CafŽ, Student Worker Hey, so my name is Gilberto Chac—n and I am a fourth year majoring in Latin American Studies with a concentration in Arts and Humanities. I am the Students First! candidate for USAC General Representative. With Students First! we hope to change the priorities of student government so that progressive change can happen on this campus, and the UCLA experience for all students can be maximized. As Gen Rep, I will put Students First! by: Engaging students to improve health options in all on campus eateries! Eat Happy Be Healthy Issue: Current UCLA eateries promote a lifestyle that makes for unhealthy students and the only sources for healthy food options are limited to the Greenhouse in Ackerman and the Organic to Go in Northern Lights. Solution: I will advocate for increased student involvement: --Work with UCLA dining and ASUCLA to provide visible nutrition charts for all foods offered both on campus and on the hill. --Work with Jill DeJager, Nutrition Education Coordinator, with the UCLA EatTask Force on a pilot program to bring new food and drink products to campus eateries. --Increase student involvement and voice in the UCLA EatTask Force. Why Am I the best person to do this? Being a health conscious student at UCLA, and having worked with UCLA dining as a Bruin CafŽ employee, I am well aware of the current condition of on campus eateries and am aware of the structures that control the type of food offered. Also, with my connections with Joanne McGill, the Assistant Director for Business services for UCLA dining, and Jill DeJager, from the UCLA Student Development Health Education Department, I have the resources necessary to enact my plans. Increase student expression on issues they care about! Student Expressions Project Issue: The Gen Rep office should be more open to student voice. Solution: A yearlong series of events/projects that allow students to address challenges they face. Examples of items I would like to push include but are not limited to: --Student safety: -Workshop for women safety services--Hate Speech versus Free Speech: -Evolution of Hate event--Global Issues and UCLA: -Undocumented student Experience--Finding a Balance as a student: -Stress workshop--I will guide the projects/events under this platform to culminate in a showcase of student expression that will be auctioned off spring Quarter, where all proceeds will go to sustaining student initiated programming. Why am I the best person to do this? My experience working with different groups on campus and coalition building within the RAZA coalition has given me the insight that there are various topics of interests within the student body. Being in leadership within Gamma Zeta Alpha, and the Latin American Student Association has given me extensive experience with large scale and small scale programming on campus, as well as delegating tasks as a leader. This ambitious project plays to my strengths in organizing and leadership development. Build a more cohesive UCLA experience! Greek Out Issue: There is a large disconnect amongst the Greek community at UCLA and also the non-greek community at UCLA. Solution: A series of events all year long that aim to break the stereotypes associated with Greek Life which include the following: --A social for all Greeks on campus fall quarter that aim to promote dialogue on what issues Greeks face both within the Greek community and non-Greek communities. --A day of community service winter quarter with non-greek organizations on campus and off campus that aim to educate both all involved on the importance of community service that impacts the greater Los Angeles area. --A party Spring quarter in which all proceeds will go to a charity or non-profit organization. After showing the community how much we care, why not end with a bang? --Expanding participation for Greek Week: The aim of this project is to educate and motivate both Greek and non-Greek communities about the power of working together. Working with the various Greek communities, the Gen Rep office will be a tool for Greek Week to grow. Why am I the best person to do this? Having pledged late in my UCLA career, I am fully aware of the perceptions of the Greek community at UCLA both within the Greeks and non-Greeks. My pride in being a brother of Gamma Zeta Alpha fraternity Inc. is often challenged by preconceived stereotypes. Knowing how many resources the Greek community has to offer the greater Los Angeles community, I aim to use my coalition building experience to educate and motivate all of UCLA on the power of working together. Improve the transition for graduating seniors! Expand and institutionalize the Idealist fair. Issue: After graduation, job opportunities are hard to come by, and it is even harder for some students to get experience that can be used to work up to a lucrative career. Solution: Increase the number of Internship/ job opportunities available for students: --Work with the current Idealist fair to institutionalize the event. --Work with Octavio Pescador with the Center for Community Learning in Murphy to expand the fair with both non-profit and conscious businesses. --Increase the number of students groups working with the fair to include community service based organizations. Why am I the best person to do this? Again, my experience with coalition building makes me the most qualified to work on bringing various entities under one event. Also, my contact with Professor Pescador will allow me greater access UCLA resources that already work with community organizations in the greater Los Angeles community. A VOTE FOR GILBERTO CHACON IS A VOTE TO PUT STUDENTS FIRST! My unmatched experience with coalition building and passion to increase student interactions will create an office that is diverse and open to student involvement, making it truly representative of the General student body. I am excited to work with the various communities on this campus, and look forward to increasing student voice by putting Students First! My name is Gilberto Chac—n, and an endorsement for me as General Representative is an endorsement for proactive growth and increasing student representation in USAC. |
